Felixstowe Academy U14 Girls Football Team vs Hadleigh High School

December 2013

The Year 9 Girls Football Team played their first ever match against Hadleigh High school recently and though they eventually lost the game 4-2, they played absolutely brilliantly.

Hadleigh started the match really well forcing Jessica Monk (playing in goal for the first time) into some excellent saves.  Though Jess and the rest of the team did their very best the pressure eventually told and Hadleigh took the lead.  However, the team responded quickly and within minutes  drew the match level.  After some great football in midfield the ball was played into the box where, after a bit of a scramble, Hannah Watts finished into the roof of the net clinically.

The sides went into the second half at 1-1 and like the first half Hadleigh were in the ascendancy.  However with Madison Bolt, Emily Smout, Alanah Maskell and Frankie Herron defending bravely and with real commitment, they were struggling to find a way through. They did eventually make it 2-1 with a fantastic strike no one could have done anything about.

Like the first half, the team responded brilliantly and after some great work in midfield from Kady Diggines and Amy Utteridge, Hannah burst past the Hadleigh defenders and under real pressure placed the ball low past the keeper. It was a fine team and individual goal.

Felixstowe Academy created some excellent chances to take the lead and with Lydia Conley and Connie Ver-Haest working really hard, Hadleigh found it difficult to take control of the game. Laura Baker was pressing the Hadleigh defence and giving them no time on the ball.

Hadleigh then had a five minute spell where they scored two good goals. At that point Laura Lamb and Jessica Vince came on. Laura who has pace to burn was causing the Hadleigh defence real problems as they were struggling to cope with her speed out wide. Felixstowe had the ball in the net but unfortunately the goal was disallowed for offside. Jess then linked up with the midfield after an excellent touch and pass but Hadleigh managed to clear their lines.

It was a fantastic effort from the team and in the end they were a little unfortunate to lose 4-2 but I am sure the team will only get stronger as they play more games. Every team member played with fantastic effort and attitude and I was very proud of all them for that.  Well done.
