AET U13 Football and Netball Tournament

October 2013

On a wet and windy Thursday sixteen Year 8 students travelled to Clacton Coastal Academy to  take part in a Football and Netball tournament for Academies within Suffolk and Essex.

The tournament consisted of six schools with each game being played over an 11 minutes period. From the five games played we are pleased to say the boys performed excellently throughout the day and recorded four wins and a draw.  This resulted in an overall position of first from the tournament with each student receiving a gold medal.

The team consisted of Tom Bury, who was solid all day in goal, Declan Jarrold and Kieran Butcher in defence who provided excellent protection to Tom in goal. Midfielders dan Poxon and Jordan Cobbold we're tireless workers throughout the day breaking up play and creating the next attack. Upfront Ryan Chidlow and Max Kent closed the defence down on every occasion and were a constant threat to the oppositions back line.

Our results were as follows

  • 2-1
  • 1-0
  • 1-0
  • 0-0
  • 3-1

Goal scores were Ryan Chidlow (4 goals), Dan Poxon (2 goals) and Kieran Butcher. It was such a hard call to pick a player of the tournament so all boys received this award for their excellent attitudes, work rate and desire to win.

The Netball games were played very quickly due to the grey sky with Felixstowe playing Greensward Academy first.

The first match was a tough game for the newly formed team which included Casey Coleman, Faith Hillier and Jess Young working well in their debut games.

Despite the team losing 8-0 in their initial match, lessons were quickly learned and the group of players progressed well in their play as the tournament progressed. The team's possession improved massively in the third and fourth games against Clacton and Tendering, and then in the final game Felixstowe played more aggressively and fought to win their last game 3-1 against Maltings.

Player of the match was awarded to Jess Young for some fantastic interceptions in the centre third.  It was great to see this team develop through the tournament and we took a lot from the event.

However, it the biggest tribute to our students came from Mr Smedley (event organisor) who said in the event report 'Felixstowe Academy Football team were outstanding finishing in first place overall. The netball team finished in 4th place, however, they must have a special mention as their positive attitude towards the event was exceptional.'

Well done to all our students!
