British Gas Swimming Championships in Glasgow

May 2014

Academy student, Rebecca Sherwin is a ‘Record Breaker’!

In May Rebecca became
the first 13 year old
girl in Britain to ever
 swim 50 metres
backstroke in under 30 seconds, at the recent British Gas Swimming Championships in
 Glasgow.

Rebecca hears the news in the pool in Glasgow...

She
 describes herself as
’very happy’ on the
day she broke the
record, as this was a
huge achievement. As
well as congratulations
and a certificate from British Swimming, she was treated to her lunch and drinks by TGI Friday when the family told the management of her record. ‘It was a lovely day!

None of this happened remotely by accident! Rebecca trains an astounding nine times a week, seven times in the pool in Ipswich and two sessions of land training. She says she has had to learn to manage her time well, as she gets up at 4.30 most mornings and trains for 2 hours before coming to the Academy for normal lessons.

Her elder sister Alice, who is also a competitive swimmer to regional level, is extremely supportive of Rebecca, helping her to prepare mentally at national competitions. Alice is currently sitting her GCSE exams and has been working extremely hard to combine study with training. Her life outside the Academy is focused on swimming and she hopes to become a swimming coach in the future.

Rebecca’s next competition will be at the East Region Championships in Norwich over two weekends in June (one on her birthday!) She has selected to swim her best seven events, as a rehearsal for the National Championships which take place in Sheffield at the end of the summer, over five days. As part of their development programme, British Swimming has selected her to compete at the Portuguese Nationals, but she has decided not to compete as they take place too close to the UK nationals which she wants to focus on.

Her future aims and dreams are to represent Great Britain at a major games. She has already competed in races with current GB Olympians such as Fran Halsall and Lauren Quigley. In the British Championships in Glasgow she was 10th out of all the female competitors in 50m backstroke - not bad at 13 years of age!

With the ongoing and complete support of her family, she has the dedication, the competitive spirit and the joy in all she does to get to the very top of her chosen career. We should all watch out for Rebecca Sherwin in years to come - we are sure to hear plenty about her and be very proud that she is a Felixstowe Academy girl.
