Felixstowe Academy U13 Boys Football Team vs Holbrook High School

May 2014

On a wet and windy Tuesday afternoon the Year 8 boys Football side travelled to Kesgrave for the final of the South Suffolk Cup.

The game was always going to be a difficult contest with Holbrook including several Ipswich Town Academy players.  The game started with just one change, Kieran Butcher coming in for Jack Harding. From start the task ahead was clear.  Kesgrave were playing some quick one touch football and Felixstowe were at this stage defending very deep and were working as hard as possible to keep Holbrook at bay. Chances were being created by Holbrook and some excellent defending from Ryan Sanders and Owen Goodwin were the highlights of a very defensive opening 20 minutes.

As the half wore on, Felixstowe Academy began to come into the game and a free kick from Ryan Chidlow was on its way into the Holbrook net until an excellent header from the defender turned it over the bar.  The half finished with chances being created by Holbrook but the resilient Felixstowe defence were doing an excellent job in protecting Tom Bury in goal.

Half time 0 – 0

We spoke at half time of the importance of keeping it tight for the first ten minutes.  Unfortunately three minutes into the second half some neat passing play enabled the Holbrook winger to break into the box and finish by shooting across the advancing Bury.  As the half wore on players’ fitness levels were struggling to cope with the chasing game as Holbrook kept the ball well and kept us deep in our half.  Mid-way through the half they extended their lead when a cross was not dealt with and their winger tucked home his second and Holbrook’s second to effectively kill the game off.  With five minutes remaining Holbrook scored a deserved third when one of their Ipswich Academy players broke through a tired defence to slot past an advancing Bury.

To Felixstowe’s credit they kept going and got a consolation goal when a good corner from Ryan Chidlow was headed home by Declan Jarrold in stoppage time.

Overall a deserved victory for Holbrook but a special mention must go to Ryan Sanders and Owen Goodwin who were outstanding in the Felixstowe defence.  Overall a successful season for the Year 8 boys who have managed to get to the last four in the County Cup and the last two in the South Suffolk Cup.

WELL DONE ALL!
