The U15 Boys Cricket Team travelled to Stowmarket Cricket Club this week to play Farlingaye High School in the final of the Suffolk County Cup.
The match was a very tight and close contest, lasting over 2 hours and 45 minutes with both teams playing excellent high class cricket. Felixstowe Academy, however, left as well deserved County Champions!
Captain Callum Burrows lost the toss, leaving us to bat first.
Conditions were very difficult for batters and fielders with a strong wind blowing across the field all afternoon making it hard to even keep the bails on the stumps. We started off well with Ben Read and Ollie Rose opening well and scoring runs with well executed runs when they were there to be played. Ollie was bowled when he mistimed a shot but the run rate we were accumulating was good so we continued to play shots in an attempt to get a big score lead.
We continued to attack with Callum Burrows, Sam Gilder, Joe Allum and Thomas Boyt successfully adding to the runs scored before losing their wickets. In hindsight the match was effectively won in our last batting over. After 19 overs we has accumulated 114 runs. Up stepped Ganenthiran Ramaswamy who, in the last overs, hit four runs whenever he could with some devastating batting leaving our final run total at 143 runs.
This score was very good and we would have definitely taken this at the start of play and gave us something to defend when it came to bowling in the field. We started off with some very tight bowling from Charlie Driver and Sam Gilder keeping Farlingaye to single runs at best.
With such a strong wind it was hard for our spin bowlers Ollie Rose and Thomas Boyt to have the impact they wanted and this subsequently lead to Farlingaye accumulating runs with some good batting of their own. A key tactic used by the boys was to keep Charlie Driver until the end if we needed to bowl a couple of tight overs should the scores become close.
As the overs passed Farlingaye continued to add to their runs keeping the contest in the balance right to the end. We employed the tactic of letting Farlingaye score singles and defended the boundary not to let four runs add up to their score. With 17 overs bowled Farlingaye were on 110 runs. This meant that we needed Charlie Driver to bowl his final two overs and keep it tight. Some excellent bowling and brilliant fielding from all the team resulted in us seeing the match out in very nerve racking circumstances.
The final score being:
Felixstowe Academy 143 runs
Farlingaye High School 129 runs
An excellent effort by all the boys throughout the competition to be crowned County Champions. With 64 schools entering the competition this is huge success by all involved. The team spirit and togetherness shown by the boys throughout the competition was something we are very proud to be part of. The boys showed on every occasion they played the quality they have and were always an absolute credit to the school and themselves.
County Champions Squad:
Callum Burrows (C), Edward Addison, Joseph Allum, Adarsh Babu, Thomas Boyt, Hayden Dadswell, Charlie Driver, Samuel Gilder, Ganenthiran Ramaswamy, and Ollie Rose.
