The Year 10 Football Team played the Quarter Final of the County Cup against Thurston Community College and we are pleased to say that they won 3-1.
The boys were fantastic from start to finish playing some excellent football and really competing all around the pitch in some very challenging conditions. The first goal came very early in the game and was a great team goal. The midfield won the ball and quickly found Callum Fratel who beat a player and then played a perfectly weighted reverse pass under lots of pressure to Luke Barnes who had made an excellent run and finished superbly to the keeper’s bottom left.
At 1-0 Thurston had a great chance but with superb reactions Adam Hart kept out a shot high to his right from inside the six yard box. With Ieuan Turner and Matt Tetley
dominating both on the floor and in the air and Lewis Hutchings and Kieron Dolan showing great determination and composure at the back defensively the team was rock solid allowing the attacking players to really show what they could do. Dan Horton, Matt Hazell, Vincent Ramilloza and Farron Leggett-Gage showed some great pace, skill and vision making life extremely difficult for their opposite numbers.
We continued to have lots of chances and the pressure told with our second goal. Matt Hazell picked the ball up on the edge of the area at a slight angle, quickly gained control of the ball and shot low to the keeper’s bottom left. Matt was outstanding throughout the game both defensively and offensively and really deserved his goal.
The team started the second half as they finished the first applying lots of pressure in midfield and creating some excellent chances.
But for some excellent goalkeeping and some bad luck more goals would have followed. We finally got a third when Callum Fratel glided past his marker and finished smartly with the outside of his right foot to the keepers bottom left. Both Nathan Baker and Ben Barkes were excellent when they came on adapting to the pace of the game superbly and performing their individual roles to great effect.
Thurston did get a goal back late on but the game ended 3-1.
The boys will now be playing Farlingaye in the semi-finals and should be very proud of all they have achieved so far. Each and every player was superb, not just in terms of the football they played but their attitude towards the game so please congratulate them when you see them. Thank you to all those students and staff who braved the weather to come out and see them as well.
