The Board of Governors, supported by Academy sponsor Academies Enterprise Trust, initiated a recruitment process straight away.
Mr Williams currently lives in Croydon, South London with his family. He has been teaching for 15 years and has previously been a senior leader for the Oasis group, for the Academies Enterprise Trust (AET) at Everest Academy and is currently working for GLF Schools as an Associate Principal. Mr Williams achieved his National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) in 2012 and has been a member of the National Talented Leaders Programme since 2014.
Speaking about his appointment Mr Williams said ‘First and foremost, Felixstowe Academy has huge potential and serves a community that I am very passionate about and wish to see flourish through transformational education. Much of this is down to my experience of working in London and rural areas, where the quality of educational provision can make such a difference to the lives, hopes and aspirations of young people.’
Mr Williams went on to add ‘I feel truly privileged to be working with the students, staff, parents and other key stakeholders within the school community. I genuinely feel that Felixstowe Academy has embarked on a special journey where the hard work and solid foundations set by Mr Salter and staff, has provided the perfect platform for the Academy to become outstanding and a true hub within the community.’
As a key member of the recruitment team Stephen Chamberlain, Regional Director of Education for the AET, commented: 'We are delighted to have appointed Anthony Williams from a very strong field of candidates. We look forward to working with the team from The Future Leaders Trust (Talented Leaders) to ensure that the academy continues to build on the strong leadership of the current Principal Mr Salter and the Felixstowe Governors. This is a fantastic initiative to ensure that the very best leaders are working in our academies and the region.'
As part of the transition process between now and September, Mr Williams will be in regular communication with Mr Salter and will be present at the Year 6 Induction events in July to meet with the Academy’s new September student cohort and their families.
The involvement of The Future Leaders Trust in identifying suitable candidates for Felixstowe Academy was a crucial part of the recruitment process, as their ‘Talented Leaders’ programme ensures that exceptional national candidates undergo a rigorous programme of evaluations of their skills and competences prior to attending any interviews at schools and academies.
Mr Salter, who became substantive Principal in September 2012, has led the process for the biggest overhaul of education within Felixstowe. During his tenure as Principal, Mr Salter has led the merger of two predecessor schools and driven the £18m New Build Project which has laid the foundations of one vibrant community in one state of the art educational campus.
Mr Salter's career started as a Music Teacher in Nottinghamshire, before moving to Suffolk as Head of Music at Holywells High School, and then moved to Deben High School initially as Head of Performing and Visual Arts before becoming Assistant Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and then Principal of Felixstowe Academy.
Mr Salter is already looking forward to working with Mr Williams, saying 'I am really pleased with the appointment and glad I have the opportunity to work with Mr Williams over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition for all our staff and students. I am also delighted that after I retire the leadership of Felixstowe Academy will be secure and in a position to go from strength to strength.'
