Academy Students Prepare for Shakespeare Schools Festival

Felixstowe Academy are very pleased to once again be taking part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival, the UK’s largest Youth Drama Festival.  A talented group of students from Years 9-13 have formed a cast and crew for our interpretation of Shakespeare’s ‘Julius Caesar’.

Our director, Miss Gordon, has been rehearsing with the students since we held open auditions in July, in preparation for our performance at Dance East, Ipswich on Wednesday 13 November.

A key part of the process is the cast workshop, which took place at Dance East on 2 October.  Our students, along with Hadleigh High School’s cast of ‘The Tempest’, worked with two professional directors on some creative ideas for interpreting Shakespeare’s text.  The groups were then given the opportunity to share a short section of their plays and get feedback on it. We chose to share the assassination scene, and received some very positive feedback, as well as some ideas for development.  Praise was given for our creative use of the space, focus and engagement of all performers, dramatic choreographed stabbing scene and menacing use of chorus; ‘it sent shivers down my spine.’ said one of the workshop leaders.

Students in our BTEC Production Arts course are taking responsibility for the technical aspects of the production, so our lighting technicians came to the workshop to meet with the venue director and go through their lighting plans; we took the opportunity to also give them a role on marketing the performance.

We couldn’t have been more proud of our students. They were highly professional, engaged and creative in the workshop, with experienced performers providing reassurance and support for first time participants.  They all felt it was a thoroughly enjoyable and creative day which left them feeling inspired and excited about the performance on 13 November.

Tickets are on sale now from the Dance East box office 01473 295230 with Felixstowe Academy performing on Wednesday 13 November only. It is likely that the event will sell out, as it did last year, so please book early to avoid disappointment!
