Sport Leaders Event for Year 8 Students

By Mrs Logan

Recently, seventeen selected students from Year 8 were invited to attend a tennis leadership event.  This was not to improve their tennis skills but was to train the youngsters to be able to lead a tennis session for younger students involving coaching, scoring, organising and leading a tennis festival or tournament. The course ran for the whole day and pupils were present from both Felixstowe Academy and Kesgrave High School and the tutor, Karen Woodrow, was from the LTA and funded by the Ipswich and South Suffolk School Games Organiser Ali Furlong.

Throughout the day the students looked at how to organise groups, how to communicate and listen effectively, how to organise activities safely, how to make the activities fun and enjoyable, how to score and organise a tournament for many teams, and much more.

The Felixstowe Academy students will be putting all this into practice when they assist at the Felixstowe Pyramid Tennis Event on 6 June at Felixstowe Tennis Club when they will be organising a tennis festival in the afternoon for the Year 1s and 2s, following which they will be running a tournament for the Year 4 pupils which usually involves between ten and twelve teams!

The students learnt a lot throughout the day and as the day progressed they became more competent and confident in their abilities as a coach and a scorer - I am looking forward to seeing them put this into practice on 6 June!
