Invitation to Apply for the Role of Parent Governor

There is currently a vacancy for one Parent Governor on the Governing Board at Felixstowe Academy and we would like to share the details of the arrangements for applications to become a new Parent Governor.

Please click on this link to a nomination form on which you can apply to become a Parent Governor. It is necessary for a Parent Governor to have a child at the Academy at the time he or she is elected.

Certain people are disqualified from being Governors and, as such, candidates are asked to make a declaration that they are not disqualified from serving as a school Governor for any of the reasons described below. If grounds for disqualification come to light as a result of this, or otherwise, the person is automatically barred from being a Governor and the appointment will terminate with immediate effect.

There is space on the nomination form for a statement of not more than 150 words where you can give details as you wish about yourself and your views. This statement would then be included on the voting paper.

Governors should be willing and able to commit to meetings as required which would be approximately three per term and be prepared to undertake training if  required.  We would particularly welcome applications with skills in Finance and HR. Once we have the applications from interested parents, if there is more than one application, a voting form will be sent to all parents and the parents will have the option to vote for the parent they would like to be elected.

The term of office is for four years whether or not the child of the elected parent remains at the Academy for the whole of this period. A Parent Governor elected now will hold office until 2020 and, like other Governors, will be eligible for re-election.  If you have any questions or would like to discuss this with Mrs Robinson, Chair of the Governing Board, please contact Mrs Cumberland on 01394 288228 or by email at who will pass on your details to Mrs Robinson.   Applications should be sent to Mrs Cumberland, PA to the Principal by Friday 26 February 2016 at the latest.

Reasons for disqualification from standing as a Governor,  include people who:

  • Can be compulsorily detained under the Mental Health Act 1983;
  • Are bankrupt or disqualified under the Company Directors Disqualification Act;
  • Have been removed from a charity trusteeship by the Charity Commissioners or High Court on the grounds of misconduct or mismanagement;
  • Are included in the list of people considered by the Secretary of State as unsuitable to work with children;
  • Are disqualified from working with children or subject to a direction under Section 142 of the Education Act 2002;
