3-4-5
At Deben, we try to impress upon students that “change is our constant companion”. Education is about change: changing minds and developing understanding. However, to truly understand change is to know that it is an unsettling process for many. Therefore, we promote “3 – 4 – 5” at Deben to help students to ground themselves when all around them is changing.
The ‘3’ is our 3Ps:
- Pride – have a pride in your appearance, in the school environment and in your achievements;
- Progress – improve from where you are at the beginning of the year to where you are at the end of the year;
- Performance – strive to reach your targets and show you are committed to your work at all times.
Our ‘4Cs to Success’ are:
- Concentration - learners are expected to have a long-term life goal and focus every day on what they need to do to achieve it. They should break that goal down so that they have smaller targets to achieve on their route to attaining their life goal. For some this will be yearly, for some daily and will take the form of levels or grades in school. All learners will have targets and must understand how they should go about achieving them;
- Co-operation – learners will work with teachers and other adults to help them to understand what it is they have to do to achieve their targets. They must also work appropriately with other learners during learning activities;
- Commitment – learners must be in school to learn, they must be punctual and they must meet deadlines such as for coursework and homework;
- Community – all learners are part of our learning community. They should care just as much about others being able to achieve their life goals and set themselves and others high expectations. Learners should also get involved in extra-curricular activities outside of lesson times and involve themselves in the life of the academy.
And now as part of the introduction of TEEP we have the 5Rs:
- Readiness – motivation, curiosity, self-belief/esteem, self-efficacy (optimism re the learning outcome, confidence and willingness to take risks);
- Resourcefulness – learn from and with others, learn creatively and in different ways, be flexible and apply your learning to different situations;
- Resilience – keep going, learn even though you might be under stress and manage your feelings about learning;
- Responsibility – maximise your self awareness, have empathy towards other learners, understand how you and others learn and make the best of opportunities given to you;
- Reflectiveness – look back and see how you could improve your performance and practice to make yourself better at learning.
Through promoting “3 – 4 – 5”, students will have constants; easy to remember ‘ways of working’ which will ground them through their learning as they change and grow.
