Teacher Training and School Direct

Felixstowe Academy is the place to go for teacher training...

Felixstowe Academy is an 11 to 18 comprehensive school at the heart of a friendly community. With high quality teaching practises, supported by an excellent teacher training programme and state of the art facilities, Felixstowe Academy is an up-and-coming school offering a wealth of opportunities for both students and staff.

We run our own Professional Studies Programme for all trainee teachers and newly-qualified teachers (NQTs) as well as involving our trainees in whole-school teacher training and INSET opportunities. Trainees and NQTs are allocated their own personal mentor, who will be available to offer excellent coaching, training, mentoring and support.

We have an excellent record of Initial Teacher Training involvement and have worked in partnership with SNITT (Suffolk and Norfolk Initial Teacher Training), Essex teacher training and universities such as the UEA.

Increasingly, we are also recruiting new staff from our trainees and there are excellent opportunities for further career development either within Felixstowe Academy or elsewhere in the AET (Academies Enterprise Trust) chain of academies.

Please take time to look through our website to see what Felixstowe Academy has to offer.

If you are interested in applying, please see the application section. If you would like work experience in a particular subject area, please contact Mr J. Wanner via email:

We look forward to hearing from you.

What is School Direct?

School Direct is an innovative school based training route with an expectation of employment once you finish.

School Direct allows academies to recruit and select the trainees they want with the expectation that they will then go on to work within the Academies Enterprise Trust, although there is no absolute guarantee of employment.

School Direct offers two types of training places for September 2018:

  • School Direct salaried placements - aimed at people who have usually worked for at least three years since completing their degree)

  • School Direct training programme - funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee through Student Finance

Would I be entitled to funding?

This would depend on the type of training place you gain, the level of your degree and the subject you are training in:

  • The School Direct Training Programme is funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee who will be eligible for the standard student support package, including training bursaries, tuition fee loans and scholarships where eligible.

  • School Direct salaried placements will be funded through the Teaching Agency to subsidise salary and/or training costs. Because it is an employment based route trainees are not eligible for a student loan.
  • The funding rates reflect national priorities for subjects.  The high priority subjects for 2017/2018 are: Physics, Maths, Computer Science, MFL, Geography and Chemistry although these are subject to change for 2018.
